Message status – sent, read, failed

Below each of your own messages, on the right, Rasum shows how far the message has got. There are three states: sending, sent and read. In addition, there is the error case.

Symbol Meaning
empty circle empty circle The message is being sent.
circle with check mark circle with check mark The message is sent. The server has accepted it.
small round profile pictures These people have read the message.
red exclamation mark in a filled circle red time with exclamation mark Sending failed.

The symbol guide explains all other symbols.

The empty circle empty circle below your message means: the message is being sent right now. It is still on its way to the server. The empty circle appears on every message that is still on its way.

Normally, the empty circle turns into a circle with a check mark after a few seconds. If the empty circle stays, your phone does not have a good connection at the moment. Check your internet, or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. More under Message is not sent.

What does the circle with a check mark mean?

Section titled “What does the circle with a check mark mean?”

The circle with a check mark circle with check mark below your message means: the message is sent. The server has accepted it. No one has read it yet.

The circle with a check mark only appears on your newest own message. Older messages of yours normally have no symbol. This is not an error: without a symbol and without red colour, a message has been sent.

iPhone: The check mark disappears as soon as someone else in the chat writes a new message. Your messages then no longer show a delivery symbol, only the profile pictures of the readers.

The small round profile pictures below a message show who has read the message. Rasum shows up to three profile pictures. If more people have read it, a “+” and a number appear next to them. As soon as someone has read the message, the profile pictures replace the circle with a check mark.

The profile pictures appear at the point in the chat up to which someone has read. Android: This can also be below other people’s messages.

Tap the small profile pictures below the message. Rasum then shows a list of everyone who has read it.

Android: The list is called “Seen by”.

Does Rasum have two check marks for “read”?

Section titled “Does Rasum have two check marks for “read”?”

No, Rasum has no double check mark and no separate “delivered” state. The circle with a check mark means “sent”. The small profile pictures mean “read”.

A red time with a red exclamation mark red exclamation mark in a filled circle means: the message was not sent. No circle appears below the message then.

What to do:

  1. Tap the red time.
  2. “Sending failed” appears with a short reason.
  3. Tap “Retry” to send the message again.
  4. Or tap “Remove message” to discard the message. It then disappears without asking again.
  5. “Cancel” closes the window without changing anything.

Check your internet connection before trying again. More help under Message is not sent.

Why was my message not sent because of verification?

Section titled “Why was my message not sent because of verification?”

Sometimes Rasum holds back a message for security reasons. This happens if you have confirmed (verified) a person and something has changed about their devices or yours. The message is then marked red.

iPhone: Tap the red time. A screen opens with one of these texts:

  • “Your message was not sent because … has not verified all devices” – with the button “Send message anyway”.
  • “Your message was not sent because you have not verified one or more of your devices”.
  • “Your message was not sent because …’s verified digital identity was reset” – with the button “Withdraw verification and send”.

With “Cancel for now” you send nothing.

Android: Long-press the message. At the top of the menu there is a red entry, for example “Message not sent because … has not verified all devices.” Tap it. You can then choose “Send message anyway” or “Withdraw verification and send”.

Only send anyway if you are sure the change is fine. If in doubt, ask the person in another way. More under Confirm device.

What does the chat list show while sending?

Section titled “What does the chat list show while sending?”

The chat list shows the status of your last message in a chat before the preview:

  • clock A small clock means: the message is still being sent. In the chat list this is a clock, in the chat itself an empty circle.
  • red exclamation mark in a filled circle A red exclamation mark means: the message was not sent. Android: Red text also says “Message failed to send”.

The chat list does not show read status.

You turn off read receipts with “Share presence”. There is no separate switch just for read receipts.

  1. In the chat list, tap your profile picture at the top left. The “Settings” open.
  2. Tap “Advanced settings”.
  3. Turn off “Share presence”.

The app explains: “If turned off, you won’t be able to send or receive read receipts or typing notifications.”

This means:

  • You no longer see profile pictures below messages. You only see the circle with a check mark on your newest message.
  • Others no longer see that you have read their messages.
  • The “… is typing…” indicator disappears in both directions.
  • You no longer see the green online dot.
