Presence and read receipts
Rasum shows who has read your messages, who is typing and who is online. All three indicators depend on a single setting: “Share presence”.
What does “Share presence” control?
Section titled “What does “Share presence” control?”The “Share presence” setting turns three things on or off together:
- Read receipts – small profile pictures below a message show who has read it.
- Typing indicator – at the bottom of the chat it says, for example, “Anna is typing…”.
- Green online dot – a green dot on the profile picture shows that the other person is online right now.
The setting is turned on at the start. There are no separate switches only for read receipts or only for the online dot.
Turn off “Share presence”
Section titled “Turn off “Share presence””You turn off “Share presence” in the advanced settings.
- In the chat list, tap your profile picture at the top left.
- Tap “Advanced settings”
.
- Turn off “Share presence”.
The app explains: “If turned off, you won’t be able to send or receive read receipts or typing notifications.”
What happens when “Share presence” is off?
Section titled “What happens when “Share presence” is off?”When “Share presence” is off, it works in both directions:
- You no longer see other people’s read receipts. Below your newest message there is then at most the circle with a check mark
.
- Others do not see that you have read their messages.
- You do not see who is typing, and others do not see that you are typing.
- You no longer see green online dots.
iPhone: Rasum then also no longer sends your own online status.
If you turn the setting back on, the indicators appear again.
How can I tell that someone has read my message?
Section titled “How can I tell that someone has read my message?”You recognise a read message by small profile pictures below the message. There are up to three pictures, after that it shows “+” and a number. Tap the pictures to see everyone who has read it.
There is no double check mark in Rasum. The circle with a check mark only means “sent”. It only appears on your newest message as long as nobody has read it yet. The page Message status explains all the signs.
Read receipts only work if “Share presence” is on for you and for the other person.
What does the green dot on the profile picture mean?
Section titled “What does the green dot on the profile picture mean?”The green dot on the profile picture means: this person is online right now, so they have Rasum open.
- The dot only appears in chats with exactly one person, not in groups or spaces.
- You see it in the chat list and at the top of the open chat.
- No dot means: offline or unknown.
- There is no “last seen” information.
If “Share presence” is off for you, you do not see any green dots.
Who sees that I am online?
Section titled “Who sees that I am online?”You only appear online while Rasum is open on your phone. When the app is in the background, Rasum does not show you as online. Only people with whom you have a one-to-one chat see the green dot.
What does “… is typing…” at the bottom of the chat mean?
Section titled “What does “… is typing…” at the bottom of the chat mean?”The line “Anna is typing…” means: Anna is typing a message in this chat right now. If several people are typing, Rasum shows several names. The indicator only appears if “Share presence” is on for you and for the other person.
