Chat list

The chat list is Rasum’s start screen. Here you see all your chats, groups and invitations.

The start screen has a header at the top, the list of your chats in the middle and a bar at the bottom.

  • Top left: your own profile picture. Tap it to open the “Settings”.
  • Top right: a magnifying glass magnifying glass. It opens the search.
  • Next to the magnifying glass: a filter button for spaces. It only appears if you are in a space. More under Spaces.

iPhone: The title “Chats” also appears next to your profile picture.

The bar at the bottom has three entries:

  • “Chats” – shows the chat list.
  • “Spaces” – shows your spaces.
  • “Start chat” pencil on a sheet – opens the screen where you start a new chat or a group. More under Start a new chat.

The currently active entry is highlighted in colour.

Each row in the chat list shows one chat. In it you see:

  • the profile picture of the chat or the person,
  • the name of the chat,
  • the time or date of the last message,
  • the last message in up to two lines,
  • small symbols on the right (see next section).

In a chat with only one person, a green dot can appear at the bottom right of the profile picture. The green dot means: this person is online right now. More under Presence and read receipts.

What do the symbols in the chat list mean?

Section titled “What do the symbols in the chat list mean?”

The symbols in a row of the chat list show the state of the chat.

Symbol Appearance Meaning
clock clock before the last message Your last message is still being sent.
red exclamation mark in a circle red exclamation mark in a circle Your last message could not be sent.
phone handset phone handset A voice call is running in this chat right now.
video camera video camera A video call is running in this chat right now.
crossed-out bell crossed-out bell The chat is muted.
@ sign @ sign Someone has mentioned you, and you have not read it yet.
– dot There are new, unread messages in the chat.

Android: If your last message failed, red text also says “Message failed to send”.

You find all the app’s symbols in the symbol guide.

There are filters above the chat list. A filter shows only some of your chats.

  • “Unread” – only chats with new messages.
  • “Favourites” – only chats you have marked as a favourite.
  • “People” – only chats with a single person.
  • “Rooms” – only groups.
  • “Invites” – only invitations you have not accepted yet.

Tap a filter to turn it on. With “Clear filters” you turn all filters off.

Android: Some filters cannot be turned on together, for example “Rooms” and “People”.

The search finds chats by their name.

  1. Tap the magnifying glass magnifying glass at the top right.
  2. Type the name of the chat or the person.
  3. The list now shows only matching chats.

Not yet. The search in Rasum only finds chat names. Searching the content of your messages is currently not possible in the app.

When you long-press a chat in the list, a menu opens with these entries:

  • “Mark as read” speech bubble with check mark or “Mark as unread” speech bubble with dot
  • “Favourite” star – marks the chat as a favourite. If it is already a favourite, it says “Favourited” filled star. Tap it to remove it again.
  • “Settings” – opens the chat’s info. More under Manage a chat.
  • “Report room” – reports the chat. iPhone: This entry only appears if the server supports reporting chats.
  • “Leave room” – you leave the chat.

You cannot mute a chat from this menu. You do that in the chat’s info. More under Manage a chat.

You can mark a chat as read without opening it.

  1. Long-press the chat in the chat list.
  2. Tap “Mark as read”.

The other way round, “Mark as unread” marks a read chat as unread again. The chat list then shows the dot again. This helps you remember it later.

In the open chat, the “New” line marks where the unread messages begin.

If you have no chats yet, the chat list shows “No chats yet.” and below it “Get started by messaging someone.” Tap “Start chat” at the bottom to start your first chat.
