In Rasum you send photos, videos and files with the plus sign to the left of the message field.

## What is in the attachment menu?

You open the attachment menu with the plus sign [Icon: plus sign] to the left of the message field. It has these entries:

- Camera [Icon: photo camera] – take a photo or video and send it.
- **"Photo & Video Library"** [Icon: picture with mountains] – send photos and videos from your gallery.
- **"Attachment"** [Icon: paper clip] – send any file, for example PDF documents.
- **"Poll"** [Icon: bar chart] – create a poll.
- **"GIF"** – search for a moving picture and send it.
- **"Text Formatting"** [Icon: letter with formatting marks] – format your text.

**iPhone:** The camera entry is called **"Camera"**. In it you choose **"Take photo"** or **"Record video"**.

**Android:** **"Take photo"** and **"Record video"** are two separate entries directly in the menu.

More about GIFs and polls under [GIFs and polls](https://doc.rasum.chat/en/medien/gifs-und-umfragen/).

## Send photos and videos from the gallery

1. Open the chat.
2. Tap the plus sign [Icon: plus sign] to the left of the message field.
3. Tap **"Photo & Video Library"**.
4. Choose a photo or video.
5. The **"Add media"** preview opens. Write a caption here if you like.
6. Tap send.

While the app prepares the picture or video, it shows **"Processing…"**.

> **Note:**
The app points out: **"Captions might not be visible to people using older apps."**

## Can I send several photos in one message?

Normally, no. Each photo and each video is sent as its own message. A preview feature for this can be turned on under **"Settings"** → **"Labs"** (see [Settings overview](https://doc.rasum.chat/en/einstellungen/uebersicht/)).

## Take a photo or video with the camera

1. Open the chat.
2. Tap the plus sign to the left of the message field.
3. **iPhone:** Tap **"Camera"** and then **"Take photo"** or **"Record video"**.
**Android:** Tap **"Take photo"** or **"Record video"**.
4. Take the photo or record the video.
5. In the **"Add media"** preview, tap send.

The first time, your phone asks whether the app may use the camera. Allow this.

**Android:** If you have not allowed the camera, the app shows **"In order to let the application use the camera, please grant the permission in the system settings."** Then allow the camera in the Android settings for the Rasum app.

## Send a file

With **"Attachment"** you can send any kind of file.

1. Open the chat.
2. Tap the plus sign to the left of the message field.
3. Tap **"Attachment"** [Icon: paper clip].
4. Your phone's file picker opens. Choose the file.
5. Check the preview and tap send.

## Share from another app

You can send photos, links or files directly from another app to a Rasum chat.

1. Open the share menu in the other app.
2. Choose **"Rasum"**.
3. Under **"Send to"**, choose the chat.
4. Send the content.

**Android:** You can choose up to 10 chats at once. Then tap **"Send"**.

## Send photos and videos in lower quality

Rasum makes photos and videos smaller when sending. This makes uploading faster and uses less mobile data.

You find the setting under **"Settings"** → **"Advanced settings"** → **"Optimise media quality"**. It is turned on at the start.

- **On:** Photos and videos get smaller and upload faster.
- **Off:** Photos and videos are sent in higher quality. This takes longer and uses more data.

**iPhone:** When the setting is on, photos are reduced to at most 2048 pixels on the long side and videos are sent in 720p. When it is off, photos stay in their original size and videos are sent in 1080p. GIF pictures are never reduced. On the iPhone, Rasum always removes location data (GPS) from photos.

## Open and save photos, videos and files you receive

Tap a photo, a video or a file in the chat. It opens in a large view.

**iPhone:** With **"Download"** you save the file. **"File info"** shows details about the file.

**Android:** The large view has **"Save"**, **"Share"**, **"Open with"** and **"Download"**. After saving, the app shows **"File saved to Downloads"**. **"File info"** shows the file name, the file format, who uploaded the file and when.

The first time you save on the iPhone, the phone asks whether Rasum may save pictures to your gallery. Allow this.

## Find all photos and files of a chat

All photos, videos and files of a chat are collected under **"Room info"** → **"Media and files"**. You open the chat info by tapping the name at the top of the chat. More about this under [Manage a chat](https://doc.rasum.chat/en/chats/chat-verwalten/).

## Why do I only see pictures in the chat after tapping them?

Rasum can hide pictures and videos in the chat. You set this under **"Settings"** → **"Advanced settings"** → **"Show media in timeline"**:

- **"Always show"**
- **"In private rooms"**
- **"Always hide"**

The app shows hidden media as soon as you tap them.

## Error messages when sending media

| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| **"The file is too large to upload"** with **"The maximum file size allowed is …"** | The file is larger than allowed. The server sets the limit. | Send a smaller file. For videos, a shorter recording helps. |
| **"Failed uploading media, please try again."** | The upload did not work, often because of a weak connection. | Check your connection and try again. Try Wi-Fi. |
| **"Failed processing media to upload, please try again."** | The app could not prepare the picture or video. | Try again or choose a different file. |

**iPhone:** **"Failed selecting media, please try again."** can also appear. **Android:** **"The file could not be uploaded."** can also appear.

For connection problems, [Connection problems](https://doc.rasum.chat/en/probleme/verbindung/) also helps.
