# Notification settings

> Set notifications for all chats and for single chats, mute chats and use mentions.

Here you set when Rasum tells you about new messages, invitations and calls – for all chats or for a single chat.

No notifications arriving at all? Then the page [Notifications are not arriving](https://doc.rasum.chat/en/probleme/benachrichtigungen/) helps.

## Set notifications for all chats
You set the notifications for all chats under **"Settings"** → **"Notifications"**.

1. In the chat list, tap your profile picture at the top left.
2. Tap **"Notifications"** [Icon: bell].
3. Make sure **"Enable notifications on this device"** is turned on.

If this switch is off, you get no notifications from Rasum on this device.

## What does "System notifications turned off" mean?
The note **"System notifications turned off"** means: your phone does not allow Rasum to show notifications. The setting in Rasum is then not enough.

1. In the note, tap **"system settings"**.
2. Allow notifications for Rasum there.
3. Return to Rasum.

## Set group chats and direct chats separately
For group chats and for direct chats (chats with only one person), you choose separately what you are notified about. To do this, tap **"Group chats"** or **"Direct chats"** in **"Notifications"**.

- **"All messages"** – you are notified about every new message.
- **"Mentions and replies only"** – you are only notified when someone mentions you with @.

**Android:** There is also the choice **"Mute"**. Then no notifications arrive for this kind of chat.

> **Mentions only in encrypted chats:**
If you choose "Mentions and replies only", the note **"Your account provider does not support this option in encrypted chats, …"** may appear. "Account provider" here means the Rasum server. The note means: in encrypted chats, with this choice you may get no notifications at all, not even for mentions. Choose **"All messages"** if you want to be sure.

## Notifications for @room and for invitations
With **"Mentions of @room"** you are notified when someone addresses all members of a chat at once. With **"Invitations"** you are notified when someone invites you to a chat.

**iPhone:** Both switches are under **"Notify me for"**.
**Android:** **"Mentions of @room"** is under **"Mentions"**, **"Invitations"** is under **"Additional settings"**.

## Notifications for calls
Incoming calls ring like a phone call on both systems. More about this under [Calls](https://doc.rasum.chat/en/anrufe/anrufe/).

**iPhone:** Under **"Additional settings"** is the switch **"Audio and video calls"**. Leave it on so that calls ring.
**Android:** If the permission for full-screen notifications is missing, the note **"Enhance your call experience"** appears. Follow the note so that calls also appear as a full screen when your phone is locked.

## Change the notification sound
You choose the sound under **"Notifications"** → **"Sound"**.

**iPhone:** You choose the message sound, a system sound, **"Silent"** or **"Custom sound…"**.
**Android:** You choose the **"Message sound"** and the **"Call ringtone"**. With **"Choose another sound…"** you use a sound from your phone.

**Android:** New messages appear as a banner at the top of the screen. You can also change exactly how they look in the Android settings for Rasum.

## Mute a single chat
You mute a single chat in the chat info.

1. Open the chat.
2. Tap the chat name at the top. The **"Room info"** page opens.
3. Tap **"Notifications"**.
4. Turn on **"Allow custom setting"**.
5. Choose **"Mute"**.

A muted chat shows a crossed-out bell [Icon: crossed-out bell] in the chat list.

**Android:** In **"Room info"** there is also a **"Mute"** button at the top. When the chat is muted, it is called **"Unmute"**.

The chat list menu (press and hold a chat) has no mute option.

## Only get notified about mentions in one chat
In every chat you can set your own rule that differs from your general setting.

1. Open the chat and tap the name at the top.
2. Tap **"Notifications"**.
3. Turn on **"Allow custom setting"**.
4. Choose **"All messages"**, **"Mentions and replies only"** or **"Mute"**.

Here too, the note about the account provider can appear in encrypted chats (see above).

**iPhone:** With **"Remove custom setting"**, your general setting applies to the chat again.

## How do mentions work?
A mention happens when someone types @ and your name in the text. This way you can address a specific person: type @ and choose the person from the suggestions.

If you have an unread mention, the chat list shows an @ [Icon: at sign] on the right of the row. There is no separate "Mentions" filter in the chat list.
